He finds his inspiration in his father and great stoics and it’s easy to find inspiration in him. In this episode, we talk failure and stoicism and I try not to play “heli(copter)-mom” when he talks about the potential dangers in his career in the Canadian military.
This week I got to catch up with my son who isn’t really mine – Nicholas McCabe. Nic is in the Canadian Army and is currently doing a phase of his training to be an artillery officer. Recently graduated from RMC, he just completed a part of his course at CFB Shilo (Manitoba) and he joins me in conversation in this episode from his current training post in CFB Gagetown (New Brunswick).
Nic has always impressed me with his positive mindset and he tells us that it is not something that he always had, but is something he very intentionally worked on as a response to failure.

I’m trying my best to pay it forward by dealing hope and sharing stories & tips on caregiving and how to survive hard things. I blog a lot about single parenting my adult twin sons who both have autism, and the challenges we face in surviving the everyday challenges and planning for a future full of unknowns.
